Annotation of src/usr.bin/sudo/README, Revision 1.1
1.1 ! millert 1: This is Sudo version 1.6
! 2:
! 3: The sudo philosophy
! 4: ===================
! 5: Sudo is a program designed to allow a sysadmin to give limited root privileges
! 6: to users and log root activity. The basic philosophy is to give as few
! 7: privileges as possible but still allow people to get their work done.
! 8:
! 9: Where to find sudo
! 10: ==================
! 11: Before you try and build sudo, *please* make sure you have the current
! 12: version. The latest sudo may always be gotten via anonymous ftp
! 13: from ftp.courtesan.com in the directory /pub/sudo/.
! 14: The distribution is sudo-M.m.tar.gz where `M' is the major
! 15: version number and `m' is the minor version number.
! 16: BETA versions of sudo may also be available. If you join
! 17: the `sudo-workers' mailing list you will get the BETA announcements
! 18: (see the `Mailing lists' section below).
! 19:
! 20: What's new
! 21: ==========
! 22: For a history of sudo please see the HISTORY file that came with this
! 23: release.
! 24:
! 25: For a complete list of changes, see the CHANGES file. For a summary,
! 26: see the web page, http://www.courtesan.com/sudo/.
! 27:
! 28: If you are upgrading from an earlier version of Sudo, please see
! 29: the UPGRADE file.
! 30:
! 31: NOTE: Starting with sudo 1.5.7 the configuration method has changed
! 32: significantly as compared to previous versions. All options
! 33: are now set via the configure script. See the `INSTALL' file
! 34: for a list of all the configure options.
! 35:
! 36: System requirements
! 37: ===================
! 38: Sudo requires a machine running UN*X (most flavors of BSD, SYSV,
! 39: or POSIX will do), a working C compiler, and the make utility.
! 40:
! 41: If you wish to modify the parser then you will need flex version
! 42: 2.5.2 or later and either bison or byacc (sudo comes with a
! 43: pre-flex'd tokenizer and pre-yacc'd grammar parser). You'll also
! 44: have to uncomment a few lines from the Makefile. You can get flex
! 45: via anonymous ftp from ftp://ftp.ee.lbl.gov/pub/flex* as well as
! 46: any GNU mirror. You can get GNU bison from
! 47: ftp://prep.ai.mit.edu/pub/gnu/bison* or any GNU mirror.
! 48:
! 49: Building the release
! 50: ====================
! 51: Please read the installation guide in the `INSTALL' file before
! 52: trying to build sudo. The `RUNSON' file contains a list of of
! 53: platforms that this version of sudo is known to work on. If you
! 54: can add to this list, please send mail to sudo@courtesan.com.
! 55: If something goes wrong you may want to refer to the `TROUBLESHOOTING'
! 56: file.
! 57:
! 58: Copyright
! 59: =========
! 60: Sudo is distributed under a BSD-style license.
! 61: Please refer to the `LICENSE' file included with the release for details.
! 62:
! 63: Mailing lists
! 64: =============
! 65: sudo-announce This list receives announcements whenever a new version
! 66: of sudo is released.
! 67:
! 68: sudo-users This list is for questions and general discussion about sudo.
! 69:
! 70: sudo-workers This list is for people working on and porting sudo.
! 71:
! 72: To subscribe to a list, send a mail message to "majordomo@cs.colorado.edu"
! 73: with a line in the message body (_not_ the subject) of "subscribe listname"
! 74: where "listname" is one of sudo-announce, sudo-users, or sudo-workers.
! 75:
! 76: Currently all the lists are fairly low-volume so there hasn't been a
! 77: need for digest versions.
! 78:
! 79: Web page
! 80: ========
! 81: There is a sudo `web page' at http://www.courtesan.com/sudo/
! 82: that contains an overview of sudo as well as pointers to BETA versions
! 83: and other useful info.
! 84:
! 85: Bug reports
! 86: ===========
! 87: A list of known bugs may be found in the `BUGS' file. If you have
! 88: found what you believe to be a bug, you can file a bug report with
! 89: the sudo bug database, on at web at http://www.courtesan.com/sudo/bugs/.
! 90:
! 91: Please read over the `TROUBLESHOOTING' file *before* submitting a
! 92: bug report. When reporting bugs, please be sure to include the
! 93: version of sudo you are using as well as the platform you are running
! 94: it on.
