Interview with Theo about funding, hackathons, and security in OpenBSD. |
An interview with Theo - over two pages, he talks about the DARPA funding |
story, explains the importance of the hackathons and how the 2003 |
hackathon was different from the past ones that had a "mission", |
like replacing ipf with pf at the Boston hackathon. Opposed to that, this |
year's hackathon didn't hava a mission, but rather around 20 teams working |
on different projects and forming new teams later to attack other problems. |
He describes a "very complex and intense climate" and points out |
that support for AMD Hammer, UltraSPARC III, SMP and Mozilla was done. |
Theo also talks about the DARPA funding cut and it's effects - basically |
that funding will work like it did before the grant, through |
CD, T-Shirt and Poster sales as well as donations. |
Asked about Linus Torvald's role in Linux Theo desribes his role in OpenBSD |
as a "friendly dictator" who is involved in all major |
decisions. |
A further topic is, naturally, security. Theo points out that an absolutely |
secure system would imply a bugfree system and thus is not possible, and |
briefly explains ProPolice and W^X. A small followup article focusses on the |
basics of ProPolice and W^X. |
