1.27 deraadt 21: Each developer working on OpenBSD has their own aims and priorities,
22: but it is possible to classify the goals we all share:
1.1 david 23: <ul>
1.3 fn 24: <li>Provide the best development platform possible - with full source access
1.22 deraadt 25: for developers and users. Code should be as FREE as possible, for
26: whatever purpose and agenda.
27: <li>Integrate good code from any source with acceptable copyright
28: (Berkeley style preferred, GPL acceptable, NDA not). We want to
29: make available source code that anyone can use for ANY PURPOSE,
30: with no restrictions. <a href=policy.html>We have a page that describes
31: the copyright issues in more detail.</a>
1.28 ! deraadt 32: <li>Pay attention to <a href=/advisories>security problems and fix
! 33: them before anyone else does</a>. (Try to be the #1 most
! 34: secure operating system).
1.3 fn 35: <li>Work towards a machine independent source tree.
1.28 ! deraadt 36: <li>Greater integration of cryptographic software. This means IPsec, IPv6,
! 37: key engines, and other forms of strong crypto. OpenBSD is developed
! 38: and released from Canada and due to Canadian law it is legal to
! 39: export crypto to the world. (As

1.28 ! deraadt 48: <li>Track and implement standards (ANSI, POSIX, parts of X/Open, etc.)
1.3 fn 49: <li>Support as many different systems and hardware as feasible.
1.21 kstailey 50: <li>Be as politics-free as possible; solutions should be decided on the
1.22 deraadt 51: basis of technical merit.
1.3 fn 52: <li>Provide a good cross compile/development platform.
53: <li>Import external packages with minimal modifications - making upgrading
1.22 deraadt 54: much easier. Also to submit back to the developers any changes made.

1.26 deraadt 59:
60: Naturally, the OpenBSD project requires funds to operate, due to
61: internet line costs and the same hardware upgrade issues everyone
62: experiences. For this reason, the project sells CDROMs of our most
63: recent release. Thus, when you buy an OpenBSD CD, whether at a
64: conference, from one of our other locations, or from our
65: <a href=orders.html> CDROM ordering page</a>, you are helping to
66: increase the chance that OpenBSD will make future releases.
67:
68: <p>
69:
70: It is also possible to donate funds or hardware, in which case your
71: name ends up on our <a href=donations.html>Donations page</a>.
72: For more information on this contact
73: <a href=mailto:deraadt@openbsd.org>Theo de Raadt</a> or simply send a
74: donation cheque in Canadian or US funds to:<p>

82: <p>
83: Theo de Raadt has spent more than $30,000 (CDN) to make OpenBSD run so
84: far, mostly due to expensive networking costs in Canada and such (due
85: to USA crypto policies, it is not possible to move the project to the
86: USA). No funding or cost-sharing of the project comes from any
87: company or educational institution. As well, Theo works full-time on
88: improving OpenBSD.

1.25 deraadt 91: <strong>Please do not take this above statement too lightly, since the
1.26 deraadt 92: project is typically not in strong financial health.</strong>
