! 48: Join Puffy Hood and his Funny Fish as they take on
! 49: the Sherriff (an unelected leader) and other evil

! 51:

! 52:
! 53: As we did for the 3.3 release, we have once again tried
! 54: making release artwork and music which are allegorical
! 55: of recent happenings.
! 56:

! 57: Two years ago we became involved with the University
! 58: of Pennsylvania and DARPA, who were funding us to do
! 59: security research and development .. on things that
! 60: we were already intending to do. We provided ideas,
! 61: wrote papers, and deployed cutting-edge technology;
! 62: DARPA provided finances and reaped a share of the
! 63: credit, and the University of Pennsylvania acted as
! 64: a middle-man. We accepted funding based on the
! 65: promise that our freedom to operate as we wished
! 66: was unaffected. To us, freedom is more important
! 67: that funding -- heck, we were dealing with the evil
! 68: forces of government, and needed to be careful.
! 69:

! 70: A few months prior to this release, DARPA suddenly
! 71: and without warning decided to withdraw that funding;
! 72: they also aggressively backed out of contractual
! 73: obligations. Many articles in the press followed regarding
! 74: this sudden manuevre. Apparently this hoopla happened
! 75: because an OpenBSD-related article in the Canadian
! 76: newspaper The Globe & Mail had quoted Theo de Raadt
! 77: making anti-war statements regarding Iraq and the
! 78: theft of oil.
! 79:

! 80: The only answer given (to major media reporters) by a
! 81: DARPA spokesperson (Jan Walker) was this:
! 82:

! 83: "As a result of the DARPA review of the
! 84: project, and due to world events and the evolving
! 85: threat posed by increasingly capable nation-states,
! 86: the Government on April 21 advised the University
! 87: to suspend work on the "security fest" portion of
! 88: the project."
! 89:

! 90: That almost toes the line of calling us terrorists!
! 91: We had lost financial support, but the release of the
! 92: statement above suddenly made us very happy to be free
! 93: of any perceived obligation to such crazy people.
! 94:

! 95: Since the termination came near natural contract
! 96: termination (about 4 months remained), less damage
! 97: than expected was sustained by the project. Sponsors
! 98: stepped forward and helped us make up the missing funds
! 99: we needed to run our "Hackathon", and the event
! 100: proceeded as planned. We even had t-shirts made with
! 101: "Workstations of Mass Development" artwork for those
! 102: developers who attended (sorry, they are not for sale).
! 103:

! 104: We could not make stories like this up. So instead,
! 105: we are making up an allegory about it, using the tale
! 106: of Robin Hood.
