OpenBSD/luna88k

OpenBSD/luna88k is an effort to port OpenBSD to the OMRON LUNA-88K and LUNA-88K2 workstations.

The current port maintainer is Kenji Aoyama (aoyama@openbsd.org), with the help of Miodrag Vallat. Others are definitely welcome to contribute!

History:

The LUNA workstation family was manufactured by OMRON corporation in the early 1990s. After several models based upon the Motorola 680x0 family, the last designs were multiprocessor systems based upon the Motorola 88100 processor.

Kenji Aoyama wanted to run a modern operating system on his LUNA-88K2 and eventually got tired of waiting for someone else to do this effort, so he started to merge the NetBSD/luna68k device support with the OpenBSD/mvme88k hardware support in January 2002. His efforts were eventually successful and his machine booted multi-user near the end of 2003.

Current status:

Currently, only the LUNA-88K2 is known to work, although the LUNA-88K should be supported as well.

The system is booting multi-user, and supports most of the on-board devices, but is currently running on one processor only.

Projects (in no particular order):

• Work on installation media.
• Better mouse support, and X server.
• Multiprocessor (SMP) support.
• Support for the remaining unsupported devices (extra serial ports, external floppy port, NEC PC-98 C-bus...)

• LUNA-88K
  The first 88100-based LUNA workstation, with one to four 25 MHz processors, and 16 to 64 MB of memory depending upon the model. (Support for this model is currently untested)
  
• LUNA-88K2
  An improved version of the previous design, with one to four 33 MHz processors, 16 to 112 MB of memory, and more on-board devices.

• On-board console serial port (siotty)
• On-board LANCE Ethernet interface (le)
• On-board SCSI controllers (spc)
• LCD display on front panel (not user-controllable)
• Keyboard, mouse and frame buffer (suitable as a console too)

Unsupported devices

• On-board non-console serial ports (tty00, tty01)
• On-board printer port (lp)
• On-board floppy port (rfd)
• NEC PC-98 slot

Getting and installing OpenBSD/luna88k:

Snapshots are made available from time to time, in this location as well as in a few mirrors.
